  • Cedarwood: Diffuse after a stressful day to relax the mind and body.
  • Geranium: Diffuse aromatically to calm nerves.

  • AromaTouch® Massage Blend: Add to bath or use with carrier oil for massage. This one does wonders for me in reducing tension.
  • Frankincense: Apply to the bottoms of feet to relax and balance mood swings.
  • Roman Chamomile: Add 1–2 drops to herbal teas to soothe the body and mind.

  • Citrus Bliss®: Diffuse aromatically or put one drop on your wrists and rub them together for an uplifting everyday perfume.
  • Wild Orange, Peppermint, and Frankincense: Energize the mind and body by placing two drops each of Wild Orange, Peppermint, and Frankincense in the palm of your hand. Rub palms together and inhale deeply.
  • Bergamot: Diffuse in the classroom or at work during high stress levels.

Angry?

  • Arborvitae:

    Diffuse at night or rub on forehead, shoulders, or chest to lessen stress and tension.

  • Patchouli: Rub on temples or apply to the bottoms of feet to calm emotions. This is a great oil for me when I am feeling irrationally angry about something.
  • Ylang Ylang: Put a few drops into Epsom salt bath for relaxation.

Restless?

  • Rosemary: Diffuse aromatically or apply topically to help reduce tension, stress, and fatigue.
  • Lavender: Add to bath water to soak away stress or apply to the temples and the back of the neck to ease muscle tension.
  • Balance™ Grounding Blend: Apply to wrists or neck to help calm nerves. Balance is my first choice when feeling restless.
  • InTune® Focus Blend: Apply to temples and back of neck to enhance concentration when feeling tired mid-afternoon.

I love massage. Well, who doesn’t? But years of extreme stress and tension in my younger days have made my muscles and fascia hard and not easily pliable. At least that’s what my massage therapists have told me. Working on my body is like massaging cement. Thank heaven for essential oils.

I’ve found by incorporating essential oils into my massages, the therapist can make far more progress in less time. It’s more relaxing, get more out of my massage, and my therapist doesn’t have to work as hard. It’s a win-win. Using the essential oils makes such a huge difference that I won’t go to a massage therapist if they are not willing to use my oils as part of my massage.

There are so many ways and reasons to use oils as part of your own massage. You can apply oils and massage in to aching feet after a long day standing, or on stiff muscles and joints after a work out (or getting out of bed, for us older folk). Use oils along with a neck or shoulder massage to ease tension.

When my daughter was younger and dealing with the emotional upheaval of puberty and being a young teenager, we struggled a bit in our relationship. We were often at odds with each other. I started giving her a foot massage in the evenings with wild orange, and it improved both her emotional state and our relationship considerably.

Aromatic/Mood massage

Most oils can have a positive impact on your mood and emotions. During massage, these oils are some of your best options for this purpose.

  • Lavender. Lavender is known for it’s ability to calm and relax, and is a great oil for both adults and children.
  • doTERRA Serenity® Restful Blend. This blend helps to calm the mind and prepare for restful sleep, so is an excellent choice for a massage shortly before bed.
  • Bergamot. This oil is both calming and uplifting. Bergamot is known of the oil of self acceptance, and can be a great choice when you are emotionally struggling. Be sure it is well diluted with Fractionated Coconut Oil, and do not choose Bergamot for your massage if you are going to be out in the sun. This oil is quite photosensitive.
  • Clary Sage or ClaryCalm® Monthly Blend for Women. Either of these would be a good choice for women dealing with more volatile emotions related to hormones, particularly during menstruation or menopause.
  • Geranium. Excellent for a couple’s massage. Its known as the oil of love & trust. Geranium can also be a good choice for those who may be processing a loss and coping with grief.
  • Grapefruit. Uplifting and bright, use Grapefruit as a massage oil to brighten the day ahead. Also photosensitive, so avoid applying to areas that will be exposed to the sun.
  • Wild Orange. My favorite for uplifting the spirit, I like to use this along with a foot massage.
  • Myrrh. Recognized as a spiritual oil, Myrrh promotes creativity and energy.

  • AromaTouch® Massage Blend: This is at the top of my list for massage. It relaxes muscles and eases tension, allowing you to get the most out of your massage.
  • Deep Blue® Soothing Blend. This blend is both cooling and comforting. It also comes as Deep Blue® Rub for a lotion-like application for targeted areas. This is one of my go-to oils for muscle aches.
  • Cypress. Cypress is the oil of motion & flow and helps get things moving. Soothing when applied on its own; use with a citrus oil for an invigorating massage.
  • Eucalyptus. Helps to promote clear breathing and create feelings of open airways.
  • Lemongrass. Lemongrass is great for tendons & ligaments, so it’s the perfect massage oil to use after an especially intense workout.
  • Marjoram. Excellent for helping to relax muscles and release tensions. Can be used to target specific tired or stressed muscles.
  • PastTense® Tension Blend. Brings a cooling and soothing sensation similar to Deep Blue, but even more so. You’ll definitely want to dilute this one well.
  • Vetiver. A soothing and aromatic massage oil for feet after a long day.

Emotional Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for psychological wellbeing. As you inhale the aroma, molecules in the essential oils travel from the olfactory nerves in your nose directly to the limbic system in the brain.

For those that don’t know what the limbic system is: It’s the part of the brain involved in our behavioral and emotional responses. It’s responsible for processing emotions, such as pleasure, anger or fear, and the behaviors we need for our survival, such as the fight or flight response.

Have you ever smelled fresh baked cookies and immediately recalled a memory of your mother baking? For me, the smell of plumeria will transport me immediately to my childhood. I’ll recall stepping off an airplane in Hawaii and experiencing that beautiful fragrance in the air. That’s our limbic system at work. It has attached emotional significance to those memories.

The limbic system is also connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, stress levels and hormone balance. The various pathways and mechanisms by which essential oils impact the mind and the body are very complex. Simply stated, when we breathe in the molecules in the essential oils, they travel to various parts of the brain – either through the limbic system or the respiratory system – and have the ability to relax, motivate, calm, energize, soothe or uplift us, often in an instant.

How do I know what oil to choose?

If you already own essential oils, experiment with them and observe how you feel, both immediately afterward and 30 minutes later. Put a drop of oil in your hands, or hold the bottle under your nose and inhale slowly and deeply for 60 seconds.

Does inhaling wild orange essential oil make you smile? It’s known as the “happy oil”. Citrus oils in general are energizing, and can help you feel more optimistic.

What about lavender? When inhaling lavender do you notice a calmer feeling or a lessening of the tension in your shoulders? Florals oils provide a more tranquil feeling.

For me, deeply breathing in patchouli will immediately reduce the tightness I often carry in my back and chest. This allows me to breathe more fully.

When experiencing anxious feelings, tree oils like cedarwood and sandalwood tend to soothe me and help me feel more grounded. My niece used to feel anxious heading off to school, but discovered a blend with peppermint helped calm her and make her feel more confidence.

If you’ve used essential oils or learned much about them, you probably know that it’s a good idea to dilute your essential oils with a carrier oil.

While there are some essential oils that can be applied “neat” or undiluted, straight from the bottle, most oils, particularly “hot” oils such as cinnamon, oregano, thyme, cassia and clove, should be diluted with a carrier oil before application. Even some oils that are frequently used neat by adults should be diluted for children, people with particularly sensitive skin, or when covering a large area on the body.

Pure, undiluted oils will absorb very quickly into your skin. Using a carrier oil will help you massage the oil into a larger area, and slow absorption into the skin. It will also help to avoid using more than is necessary, potentially wasting your precious oils.

Most pure carrier oils are great for the skin, offering nourishing, moisturizing and regenerating benefits.

Diluting your essential oil, even at a 10 to 1 ratio (ten drops carrier to 1 drop of essential oil) will not reduce the efficacy of an oil – so when in doubt, dilute.

Essential oil dilution is sometimes specified in terms of either a percentage or a number of drops to be added to an amount of carrier oil.

The charts are helpful to beginners with essential oils who are still unsure about essential oil dilution and the appropriate carrier amounts. It gives a starting point. Over time, you develop the knowledge and intuition in knowing the amount of carrier to use for certain applications.

There are a variety of oils to choose from when selecting a carrier oil. I personally like fractionated coconut oil the best, though I do use a variety of carrier oils. Some of the benefits of popular carrier oil are:

Coconut Oil

Whole coconut oil is solid at room temperature and has long unsaturated fatty acid triglycerides. This oil has a high percentage of completely saturated triglycerides (no double bonds). When the smaller fatty acids and long-chain triglycerides are separated from the whole coconut oil, it leaves only saturated fats or a fraction of the whole oil. This is then known as “Fractionated Coconut Oil.”

Advantages of Fractionated Coconut Oil

Fractionated coconut oil is perfect for essential oil dilution. It never goes rancid because of the fact there is no oxidation. Therefore, has an indefinite shelf life and is in a perfectly clear liquid form. Other advantages:

  • It is odorless and colorless. It won’t stain and easily washes out of clothing and sheets.
  • It absorbs into the skin while reducing essential oil evaporation.
  • It is excellent on skin; a natural and very safe moisturizer, softener and safe, non-irritant lubricator.
  • It leaves skins smooth with no greasy feeling.
  • Low production costs make it cost effective.
  • It can be mixed with other, more expensive, carriers to increase shelf life. It can also be used it to create different cream textures.
  • It does not aggravate skin problems or clog pores.
  • It is fully digestible and considered an excellent and healthy cooking oil.
  • It is one of the best multi-purpose carrier oil products on the market.

Advantages of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO – not fractionated)

Virgin Coconut Oil is excellent for skin care and has a list of additional benefits. Organic VCO can be obtained at the health food store or on line. It’s white, solid (below about 73 degrees) and has a slight coconut flavor. Avoid using a microwave when melting to use with essential oils. Instead, place a glass container with the VCO in a pan with hot water from the tap. This will be sufficient warmth to melt the VCO. Then add the oils and blend a salve which can be saved in a baby food jar or other small jar.

Olive oil is known as one of the most quality culinary oils. It has a multitude of uses, including a quality carrier oil. Depending on the press, it has a full-bodied flavor and a strong aroma, and can also have a golden brown or green color.

  • It is a quality lubricant.
  • It has approximately a one-year shelf life.
  • It is an excellent conditioner for hair.

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil, as the name indicates, is made from the seed of the grape. Its production prior to the 20th century was limited because grape seeds contain such a small quantity of oil. The process of extraction is labor intensive. It is most widely known for its healthful culinary applications. It is beginning to be recognized as a massage oil, lotion base, hygiene cream, and lip balm. It is relatively odorless and is excellent for essential oil dilution. It is mostly clear with a very light yellow/green tinge and has a slightly sweet taste.

Other advantages of grapeseed oil are:

  • It offers regenerative and restructuring characteristics that offer quality skin moisturizing.
  • It is considered an excellent lubricant for massage and shaving.
  • It leaves a glossy film that protects essential oils from evaporation. Saturation takes longer than some other carriers.
  • Some claim it has astringent qualities that tighten and tone the skin.
  • It does not aggravate acne or clog pores.

Jojoba Oil

Another good choice for essential oil dilution, Jojoba oil is found in the seed of the Jojoba plant. It is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It is considered a natural wax. It is nearly colorless (slight yellow tint) and odorless. It is normally liquid at room temperature; its melting point is just over 40° F.

Other advantages of jojoba oil are:

  • It has a very stable shelf life and when mixed with other carriers, increases their shelf life.
  • It is known for its nourishing qualities for the skin.
  • It closely resembles the natural oils of our own skin
  • It absorbs well into the skin, with no greasy feeling.
  • It is naturally protective to sensitive skin.

Safflower Oil

Safflower oil is extracted from the seeds of the safflower plant, which is commonly used as a vegetable oil and is relatively inexpensive. It can be used for essential oil dilution, but it has a high content of unsaturated fatty acids and can go rancid quickly. Its best shelf life (about 1 year) is guaranteed if it is mixed with another quality carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil. It is a pale yellow, nearly colorless, and has very little odor.

Other advantages of safflower oil:

  • It has excellent moisturizing qualities.
  • It is a good lubricant.
  • It is easily absorbed.
  • Quality safflower does not stain.
