As I’ve mentioned before, I love to clean with lemon essential oil. This is a great recipe for deep cleaning. You can avoid hours of scrubbing with this powdered cleanser DIY. It makes it easy to clean even the grimiest of surfaces with very little work. Just sprinkle on the surface, walk away for 15–30 minutes. Return and give a little scrub and then wipe clean.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups borax
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • ½ cup citric acid
  • ½ cup kosher salt
  • 20 – 25 drops Lemon oil

Note: Although borax is natural, it can be toxic when ingested and should be kept away from children and pets. If you are concerned about using borax, you can omit it.

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients into a large bowl and stir until combined.
  2. Store in a large shaker bottle.
  3. To use, dampen surface and sprinkle powder over area you want to clean.
  4. Let sit for 15–30 minutes. For an extra cleansing boost, spray distilled vinegar on powder and wipe clean.
An old spice or Parmesan cheese shaker works great as your shaker bottle!

I LOVE cleaning with lemon. It smells so clean and fresh and it is a cleaning wonder. Got sticky residue? Use lemon. Grease on your stovetop? Use lemon. Permanent magic marker scribbled all over your wood credenza (yes, this is personal experience)… Use lemon.

I tend to use my lemon on nearly everything (except plastic*) straight out of the bottle. But if you want to be a little more conservative with your essential oil, this this is a great recipe for you.

With this mixture, you can shine stainless steel, remove grime from microwaves, freshen up your garbage disposal, and even deep clean appliances like your washing machine and refrigerator.

Ingredients
10 drops Lemon oil
1 cup water
1 cup vinegar

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a glass container and mix well.
  2. Spray on the surface you wish to clean and wipe off with a clean cloth.

You can use this mixture with a toothbrush, microfiber cloth, or other cleaning tool to dust, shine surfaces, and remove dirt and grime around the home. I recommend you mix this up in a spray bottle and keep it in your kitchen or bathroom. That way you have easy access when daily spills and messes occur. Shake well before each use.

*Note that lemon, as well as other citrus oils, can dissolve petrochemicals. This is a great thing when wanting to detoxify your body, but not so awesome when you’re using it with cheap plastic. Always use glass or stainless steel as containers for your essential oils and essential oil DIY recipes.

Here’s an idea to get your kids more interested in cleaning the bathroom! This DIY turns chores into fun with fizzing bubbles that will clean and deodorize your toilet!

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ½ cup citric acid
  • ½ cup borax or cornstarch
  • Spray bottle, filled with water
  • 1 gallon-size Ziplock bag
  • 25 drops essential oils
  • A mold (a plastic measuring cup, or silicone muffin pan work well)

To Use:

Drop one of the bombs into the toilet, the ingredients will be released into the bowl, both deodorizing and cleaning. Flush, and you’re done! (Some nastier stains may require a little scrubbing.)

Instructions:

1. Place dry ingredients into the gallon bag, seal and knead to combine ingredients.

2. Open the bag, spray two to three times with water, and reseal the bag. Knead the ingredients in the bag until all the moisture is absorbed.

3. Repeat Step 2 until you can squeeze ingredients in the bag, and the mixture stays clumped together when you let go. It should, roughly speaking, be the consistency of pie dough.

Note: If your bag expands and looks like it may burst, let the air out. This is natural, as the combined acid and alkali form carbon dioxide.

4. Add 25 drops of essential oil of your choice and mix again.

5. When it’s the right consistency, pack into your selected molds.

Tips: If you’re using a measuring cup, pack the mixture into the cup and turn the toilet bombs out onto a sheet of parchment paper to dry.

6. Leave the toilet bombs to dry for one to two days, and then unmold. The toilet bomb will be fragile at first but will continue to harden.

7. Store in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid until ready to use.
