Stephen Colbert and Rush
Jul 17th, 2008 by craig
Despite his own opinion, Stephen Colbert will always be a second to Jon Stewart. However, last night he was at the top of my list: he had Rush on as guests. It was alot of fun, Stephen had a great time giving his producer grief – or was his producer giving Stephen grief? – about how big a Rush fan the producer is. One of my favorite moments was when the producer asked Rush “will you sign my host?”
This is the first time Rush has been on US television in over 30 years, and Stephen did a good job giving them their due (did you know that Rush is 4th on the list of all time gold and platinum record certifications?).
You can see the whole show (and there’s enough Rush throughout that I think the whole show is worth watching) at:
What a happy, momentus day at the Cottle household! Did the kids stay up late to watch?
No, alas, they both were sleeping… however, Sam made sure I tapped it so that he could watch it first thing this morning. He got quite a kick out of the whole show…
This evening, at your suggestion, I downloaded the show from itunes….
First I would like to suggest one correction, it’s no biggy but Colbert was getting grief from his Director, not his producer. (He’s his own producer along with Jon Stewart and others)
Anyway when I saw the begining of the show I immediately thought of you guys. I agree he did a good job, and I like how he ended the show and then started the show last night. I didn’t know Rush had such long songs. I can only hope we have as good a show when we go to New York. Colbert Rocks! (sorry I like him better than Jon Steward, not that he’s not good)
You know, Holly, when I first wrote the post, I wondered if anyone would take issue with my opening statement: comparing Stephen Colbert with Jon Stewart. I would still argue that Stewart is more entertaining than Colbert – I get a little tired of Colbert’s self aggrandizement. Stewart has such a great quality of saying volumes without saying a word – he does it with just a look.
I also thought it was fun that he started last night’s show with the conclusion of the Rush song…. It was great! The only problem: for those of us die-hards, that wasn’t really one of Rush’s long songs – comparably speaking it’s on the short side, and was actually released as a single back in the day.
Thanks for the heads up on the producer/director thing – I thought it sounded wrong at the time, but was too spaced to figure it out…. I’ve also just noticed that I spelled Stephen wrong… that one I’ll have to go fix…
Colbert is very funny, but Jon Stewart is a god.
I agree Jon Stewart does say a lot with just a look, but I don’t know I just like Stephen Colbert more. Maybe it’s because I’m more on a conservative side of things, maybe it’s the way Colbert acts so sure of what he’s saying even when it’s got it’s obvious flaws, maybe it’s how ridiculous he can be when talking about things. I don’t know. Regardless, to each his own I guess. But never the less, I still tape both shows every night so I can watch them the next morning. Those are two of my favorite shows.
Holly, at the risk of bringing up the dreaded generation gap, I believe Stephen Colbert appeals to a younger audience. He’s a little sillier where Jon Stewart is much more of a straight man…
I never tape things for later (though I probably should since those two shows don’t end until midnight….), though lately I’ve been tempted by the whole DVR thing… being able to pause and rewind live shows, skip commercials, etc… Perhaps I’ll have to break down and catch my technology up.
I think you’ve got that right. Colbert is definitely sillier than Jon Stewart. I still like both of them tho. You are however lucky that they start @ 11, I have to wait for them to come on @ Midnight, which means over @ 1am or I just tape them and that’s old school, VSH baby. I wish I could afford a DVR but I had to almost force basic cable on my roommates, so I guess that will have to do for now.
Man, if they didn’t start until midnight I’d probably never see them… maybe that’s what you get being in the Mountain time zone.
David just spent the week with us and our basic cable – without the DVR or any of the other technological marvels he’s used to. He didn’t say anything, but I’m afraid he considers us in the dark ages around here….
