The Day After Halloween
Nov 1st, 2008 by craig
Today is November 1st; the day after Halloween.
I was in Walmart briefly this afternoon – just long enough to find they didn’t have what I needed. As I was leaving, I sort of sang along with the instrumental background music they were playing. It was surprisingly annoying to find myself singing: “the hopes and fears of all the years….”
Yes, they’re playing Christmas music in the Walmart today. November 1st; the day after Halloween.
Oh, and they would be playing “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” – one of my LEAST favorite carols of all time….
What the hell are you doing in Walmart anyway? Walmart is evil.
I’m losing my mind. Hopes & fears of all the years is from “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem…..” not among my least favorite. I really don’t like I heard the bells. It’s redundant and boring.
I was looking for Cheddar Cheese Cup-O-Noodles for those kids!!!! I know, I know… Walmart is evil, but it’s also, usually, very convenient….
lol lol, it was also annoying when they carted out all the Christmas stuff on Sept 1.
I hate how the retailers commercialize everything and anything they can.
For some reason, it hasn’t bothered me so much when they haul out the Christmas stuff… I think Costco has had Christmas out since July…. but there was something very insidious about them putting music in my head like that. I feel sort of violated….
Up here we were getting Christmas stuff BEFORE Halloween. Gee I wonder what the big money making Holiday is?
We had Christmas music and decorations on October 31st in my Wal-Mart! Is it just me or are the decorations coming out eariler and eariler every year!
Holly – Everything’s earlier in Canada!!! Thanksgiving in early October, the Grey Cup game in November, the first snowfalls, nightfall… I fully expect Canada to start celebrating Christmas somewhere around December 15th.
Heather – It’s definitely not just you. I’ve taken to just ignoring the displays until I’m ready, since it seems they’re out sometime in July…
HHHMMMM? I don’t know about Dec. 15… that’s even later than the start of your Christmas season. I think Canada has started taking a cue from the Americans though with the Christmas season starting right after Thanksgiving. That just messes things up, before we know it we’ll start getting kids dressing up as snowmen and Santa for Halloween (although those would be warm trick-or-treating costumes, always a must here in Canada). Plus I think it detracts a little from Remembrance Day, an important time that can get over shadowed by the commercialism of Christmas. I’m cool with it starting Nov. 12.
Just a couple more points to make, Thanksgiving in October is fine by me. That Holiday and my birthday always go together, that’s the way it should be. The Gray cup, well I’m sure you know what it’s like to play in snow. I feel for those guys, but I don’t know why they don’t get roofs on their stadiums. Lastly I’ll give you the snow and long nights, that sucks. One of the reasons I want to leave Canada, we have 2 seasons winter and spring/fall.
