Yes – it is, as I suspected, a Rush piece 🙂
I imagine that Geddy Lee’s unique voice/range make it virtually impossible for another band to cover their songs… so a string quartet is a good choice!
Which version do you find yourself listening to more freqently?
The strings versions really miss two things: the percussion and Neil’s lyrics. Geddy’s melodies are unique and often tricky, but it’s just not Rush without the drums and lyrics. Lately I’ve been listening to the strings a little more, because I’ve had it in at the office, which is a little more conducive to the strings.
Yes, as Kris often says about covering Rush “why bother?” Although I do have to say that while Josh was with Four Rivers Band we covered “2112” and “Working Man” and they were a blast to play, especially “2112.” But certainly not “dancing in the bar” type things – which is really what we try to lean towards. Our new lead guitar player, Danny, says he wants to play “Fly By Night” but we’re struggling with getting it down. It’s been interesting to move towards some of the things he brought to the group though, like “Money for Nothing,” and some Beattles: we’re doing “Day Tripper” and “Come Together.” We’ve also made an attempt at “Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin'” but let me tell you, it’s even harder to sing Steve Perry than it is to sing than Geddy.
