Essential oils are safe and easy to use. However, it is important to remember that therapeutic grade oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. They should be used with reasonable care.

Pure, high quality oils.

The most important guideline for essential oil safety that I can give you is to use high quality, therapeutic grade essential oils. This is super important. You want oils that have been tested for both potency and impurities. Using an inferior oil or one that is synthetic could cause harmful reactions, and may not provide the same therapeutic benefit you are hoping for.

Start Slowly.

If you are new to essential oils, start out slowly. Don’t slather 10 new oils on your skin first day. Introduce a few oils, then in the next day or two, try a few more. If you have sensitive skin or are prone to irritation, do a skin patch test before using an oil.

Never apply oils directly to the eyes or ear canal.

There are some places that oils just shouldn’t go. Eyes and ears are at the top of that list. After you have applied oils, wash your hands before rubbing your eyes or around the eyelids, touching the interior of your nose or handling your contact lenses. Other areas that are sensitive and prone to irritation are the skin around the genitals and the mucous membranes. These are both prone to irritation. Guys, be sure to wash your hands before using the restroom, particular after applying an oil like peppermint.

Check with your doctor if you are on medications, are pregnant or nursing or have critical health concerns.

Dilute.

Because skin reactions, especially on sensitive areas or those with sensitive skin, are possible even with the highest quality of oils, we always recommend you dilute oils with a carrier. Diluting will not diminish the effectiveness of the essential oil, so do not hesitate to do so if you have any concern about skin irritation.

Always dilute with a carrier oil with babies, children, the elderly and those with sensitive skin. Their skin is more sensitive and susceptible to irritation, burning, or stinging sensations. Use a carrier oil to protect this sensitive skin against irritation.

When applying oils to babies & children, ensure they will not accidentally get the oils in their eyes or mouth. The bottoms of the feet and then covered with socks, or along the spine are good locations.

Remember that repeated use of an oil in the same area can, for some people, also cause a sensitizing reaction. So mix it up a little. Avoid applying the oil to the same place day after day.

Do a Basic Skin Test

When using a new oil for the first time, a skin sensitivity test can help you avoid potential issues if you do happen to be more sensitive to that oil.

Place a small amount of carrier oil such as coconut or olive oil, followed by a small amount of the essential oil on the inside of the elbow, underside of the forearm, or wrist. After approximately 1 hour, check the area(s) for any type of reaction.

If you have experienced discomfort, reddening or a rash, you will want to avoid using that oil – at least that brand’s offering of that oil.

Dilute with oil, not water.

If you happen to get an essential oil somewhere you did not intend, or experience discomfort when applying it to your skin, please use a carrier oil or pure vegetable oil to rinse or dilute the area. Using water will increase the discomfort.

“Warm oils”

Some oils, such as cinnamon, thyme, oregano, cassia, black pepper and clove, can feel very warm or even hot/burning on the skin and should be diluted with a carrier oil when used topically, even on adults. Peppermint is a “cooling” oil, but is another oil you may want to dilute.

Some essential oils are photosensitive.

Photosensitive oils, primarily citrus oils such as wild orange, bergamot, grapefruit, lime, lemon, and mandarin, react to radiant energy or light such as natural sunlight, sunlamps, or other sources of UV rays.

The result is a dark pigmentation or a rash on the skin like a suntan / sunburn. To avoid issues with photosensitive oils, wait a minimum of six to 12 hours before exposing the skin where you have applied citrus oils to UV rays or sunshine.

A little goes a long way.

Essential oils are pure concentrates. The higher quality the oil, the more potent it will be, so smaller amounts are required. One or two drops is considered a dose. Less oil, more often, is best. You do not need to wait hours before using an oil again. Apply the oil; if there is still discomfort, apply more again in a few minutes.

Internal Use.

While most essential oils on the market should not be taken internally (and this warning is usually on the label), certified pure oils are labeled as dietary supplements and are safe for internal use, in small quantities. You can use mild oils by putting a drop under the tongue or in water, however, hot oils should be taken in capsules. They can also be diluted with a carrier/vegetable oil or taken with food. Many oils may be used in cooking recipes for flavoring and/or therapeutic benefit. My husband makes some awesome peppermint brownies!

Pregnancy & Nursing.

Oils applied topically at ordinary levels should be safe for a developing fetus, however, please use caution with essential oils during pregnancy. Popular oils that are generally considered safe to use during pregnancy include bergamot, lavender, lemon, geranium, ginger, sandalwood, wild orange and ylang ylang. Other oils may also be suitable; please consult your healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns.

We do recommend avoiding clary sage until delivery. Fennel can help support a normal milk supply, while use of peppermint can reduce milk supply in some mothers, so you may want to avoid internal use of peppermint (and blends containing it) in the weeks prior to delivery and while nursing. Additional oils may be helpful during and after delivery.

Diffusing around pets.

When diffusing oils around pets, make sure that the door to the room is open and the pet is free to leave. Most of our furry friends enjoy the oils and can benefit from them, but your pet must to be able to move away from the diffuser when they need a break. Avoid using melaleuca (tea tree) on/around cats. The book SpOil Your Pet by Mia K Frezzo & Jan C Jeremias is a great resource for guidance on using oils with your pets.

Essential oil and bath water.

One common application method is in a bath. When using undiluted oil in bath water, you will want to use a dispersing gel (bath/shower gel can work) to prevent oil from pooling as a concentrated drop in the water, which could then irritate your skin. Also note that oils will evaporate quickly in very hot water.

Additional Essential Oil Safety CAUTIONS:

Persons with conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, high blood pressure, or other critical health conditions can definitely benefit from essential oils to support their overall health & wellness goals, but may want to consult a healthcare professional. In general, individuals with epilepsy should be cautious with or may want to avoid: Rosemary, fennel, sage & eucalyptus.

Do you know where your oils come from? Have they undergone testing to ensure they are free of fillers, pesticides and adulterations?

Did you know there is no regulation in the essential oil industry? There is no standard that needs to be met and no one is checking to see if that bottle of oil labeled “100% pure essential oil” is actually pure, or has any natural essential oil in it at all.

Adulteration is very common in the essential oil industry. This makes it very hard for the average consumer to know whether the oil they are using is actually a pure essential oil.

What is adulteration?

Oils can be adulterated in several different ways. It occurs during the production process and it is intentional—you cannot accidentally adulterate an oil. By adding other substances to the pure essential oil, the producer can get a lot more money out of their oil.

One common method of adulteration is adding other oils. Less expensive essential oils are added to more costly oils in an effort to reduce the cost to produce. Oils similar in chemistry are used (like adding cassia to cinnamon, or cypress to frankincense), making it hard to detect.

Dilution is another way essential oils are frequently adulterated. Adding in a carrier oil, like coconut or canola oil, allows a company to maintain the chemistry of the oil, but have a lot more of it. The problem with this is that it can significantly reduce the potency and effectiveness of the oil.

Another method is adding in natural isolates, which is adding a natural chemical to the essential oil. It’s a chemical you would find in the oil, like alpha-pinene, but it come from something else entirely.

Creating synthetic oils in a lab. We are able to create synthetic chemical constituents, often out of petro-chemicals. “Lavender” can be produced without using a Lavender plant at all. Instead it is synthesized linalool and linalyl acetate, from petroleum-based products. This is far less expensive than actually growing, harvesting and distilling a pure essential oil.

Why does essential oil quality matter?

Purity and potency are of critical importance when you are using essential oils for yourself and your family. You want to know that the oils will be both safe and effective. Oils that have been adulterated will lack potency and have diminished therapeutic value. They may also be harmful to our bodies and they are much more likely to cause allergic reactions or have toxic side-effects.

Oils may be pure and without intentional adulteration, but still contain pesticides or herbicides that we do not want in or on our bodies. This is why it is important to know the company producing your oils conducts thorough testing on the oils to ensure each batch is going to be pure, potent and safe.

What should we look for in our essential oils?

There are so many factors that contribute to essential oil quality and whether the oils you are using will be both safe and effective. Here are a list of some of the most important ones:

Plant quality: Does the company use high-quality plants to produce their essential oils? Are the plants grown in the right conditions with the right farming practices?
Production practices: Does the company have safety procedures in place to guard against contamination during the production process? Are oils adulterated or are synthetic fillers added to cut costs?
Testing methods: Does the company test each batch of essential oil? Is impartial, third-party testing used? Are test results available to the public?
Storage and handling: Are the oils carefully processed, packaged, and stored to avoid chemical alterations caused by exposure to heat or light? (Amber bottles are typically the best option for essential oil storage.)

If you’ve used essential oils or learned much about them, you probably know that it’s a good idea to dilute your essential oils with a carrier oil.

While there are some essential oils that can be applied “neat” or undiluted, straight from the bottle, most oils, particularly “hot” oils such as cinnamon, oregano, thyme, cassia and clove, should be diluted with a carrier oil before application. Even some oils that are frequently used neat by adults should be diluted for children, people with particularly sensitive skin, or when covering a large area on the body.

Pure, undiluted oils will absorb very quickly into your skin. Using a carrier oil will help you massage the oil into a larger area, and slow absorption into the skin. It will also help to avoid using more than is necessary, potentially wasting your precious oils.

Most pure carrier oils are great for the skin, offering nourishing, moisturizing and regenerating benefits.

Diluting your essential oil, even at a 10 to 1 ratio (ten drops carrier to 1 drop of essential oil) will not reduce the efficacy of an oil – so when in doubt, dilute.

Essential oil dilution is sometimes specified in terms of either a percentage or a number of drops to be added to an amount of carrier oil.

The charts are helpful to beginners with essential oils who are still unsure about essential oil dilution and the appropriate carrier amounts. It gives a starting point. Over time, you develop the knowledge and intuition in knowing the amount of carrier to use for certain applications.

There are a variety of oils to choose from when selecting a carrier oil. I personally like fractionated coconut oil the best, though I do use a variety of carrier oils. Some of the benefits of popular carrier oil are:

Coconut Oil

Whole coconut oil is solid at room temperature and has long unsaturated fatty acid triglycerides. This oil has a high percentage of completely saturated triglycerides (no double bonds). When the smaller fatty acids and long-chain triglycerides are separated from the whole coconut oil, it leaves only saturated fats or a fraction of the whole oil. This is then known as “Fractionated Coconut Oil.”

Advantages of Fractionated Coconut Oil

Fractionated coconut oil is perfect for essential oil dilution. It never goes rancid because of the fact there is no oxidation. Therefore, has an indefinite shelf life and is in a perfectly clear liquid form. Other advantages:

It is odorless and colorless. It won’t stain and easily washes out of clothing and sheets.
It absorbs into the skin while reducing essential oil evaporation.
It is excellent on skin; a natural and very safe moisturizer, softener and safe, non-irritant lubricator.
It leaves skins smooth with no greasy feeling.
Low production costs make it cost effective.
It can be mixed with other, more expensive, carriers to increase shelf life. It can also be used it to create different cream textures.
It does not aggravate skin problems or clog pores.
It is fully digestible and considered an excellent and healthy cooking oil.
It is one of the best multi-purpose carrier oil products on the market.

Advantages of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO – not fractionated)

Virgin Coconut Oil is excellent for skin care and has a list of additional benefits. Organic VCO can be obtained at the health food store or on line. It’s white, solid (below about 73 degrees) and has a slight coconut flavor. Avoid using a microwave when melting to use with essential oils. Instead, place a glass container with the VCO in a pan with hot water from the tap. This will be sufficient warmth to melt the VCO. Then add the oils and blend a salve which can be saved in a baby food jar or other small jar.

Olive oil is known as one of the most quality culinary oils. It has a multitude of uses, including a quality carrier oil. Depending on the press, it has a full-bodied flavor and a strong aroma, and can also have a golden brown or green color.

It is a quality lubricant.
It has approximately a one-year shelf life.
It is an excellent conditioner for hair.

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil, as the name indicates, is made from the seed of the grape. Its production prior to the 20th century was limited because grape seeds contain such a small quantity of oil. The process of extraction is labor intensive. It is most widely known for its healthful culinary applications. It is beginning to be recognized as a massage oil, lotion base, hygiene cream, and lip balm. It is relatively odorless and is excellent for essential oil dilution. It is mostly clear with a very light yellow/green tinge and has a slightly sweet taste.

Other advantages of grapeseed oil are:

It offers regenerative and restructuring characteristics that offer quality skin moisturizing.
It is considered an excellent lubricant for massage and shaving.
It leaves a glossy film that protects essential oils from evaporation. Saturation takes longer than some other carriers.
Some claim it has astringent qualities that tighten and tone the skin.
It does not aggravate acne or clog pores.

Jojoba Oil

Another good choice for essential oil dilution, Jojoba oil is found in the seed of the Jojoba plant. It is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It is considered a natural wax. It is nearly colorless (slight yellow tint) and odorless. It is normally liquid at room temperature; its melting point is just over 40° F.

Other advantages of jojoba oil are:

It has a very stable shelf life and when mixed with other carriers, increases their shelf life.
It is known for its nourishing qualities for the skin.
It closely resembles the natural oils of our own skin
It absorbs well into the skin, with no greasy feeling.
It is naturally protective to sensitive skin.

Safflower Oil

Safflower oil is extracted from the seeds of the safflower plant, which is commonly used as a vegetable oil and is relatively inexpensive. It can be used for essential oil dilution, but it has a high content of unsaturated fatty acids and can go rancid quickly. Its best shelf life (about 1 year) is guaranteed if it is mixed with another quality carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil. It is a pale yellow, nearly colorless, and has very little odor.

Other advantages of safflower oil:

It has excellent moisturizing qualities.
It is a good lubricant.
It is easily absorbed.
Quality safflower does not stain.
